What is an Elephant Walk?

Elephant walk is a term used by the US Air Force, meaning that all the aircraft run on the ground together before they begin their final take-off or after the landing. The technical term for the same is known as taxiing.

The first time when the elephant walk took place was during World War II when the allied bombers conducted raids with thousand of bombers with them. People who noticed this event with their eyes said that seeing all these aircraft in a single place and their take-off in alignment reminded them of the line of elephants walking to the watering hole.

Further, this alignment started to be used for launching large numbers of aircraft in the least possible time, especially during emergencies.

Over the years, the technique has gone through some changes.

Use of Elephant Walk

As we know that this technique has multiple uses for the IAF, and its primary significance lies when the pilots want to launch several fighter planes in a very minimum time. In these formations, further small groups of aircraft begin the take-off in one single moment. Generally, a group consists of 2-3 fighter planes. However, there is a very short time difference between the take-offs of different groups.

Using the taxiing technique, the whole squadron can be shifted to air within a significantly lesser duration to fight against the enemy formation and empower them in no time. It is one of the best techniques to handle big enemy formations and get victory in our hands.
