About Flying Training Establishments of Indian Air Force

The dream of many youngsters and dreamers is to serve their nation as an Indian Air Force officer. Not only is this service reputed and prestigious, but it pays off well. To be an Air Force Officer requires dedication, confidence, and skills that you learn in your training after the selection in Air Force Training. They prepare you physically for your job, but they also provide additional skills to make you mentally prepare for your service as an officer. 

This is why Air Force Training Institutes must be precise in their offerings and training for future officers. 

Flying Training Establishments of Indian Air Force 

1. Air Force Academy 

Got its foundation in 1971, Air Force Academy has the unfoldable reputation and popularity in the defence services. Moreover, it is one of the premium and high-ranking training institutes of the Indian Air Force. 

Situated around 43 kilometers from the main Hyderabad city, AFA is located at Dundigal. To get admission to this institute, there is an initial procedure and a three-year training period at the National Defence Academy afterwards. After that, students go under specialized training at any of the establishments. And after that, they are authorized as Permanent Commission officers and get posted as a pilot in any of the Air Force Stations of the country. 

The Air Force Academy not only prepares you physically for the upcoming responsibilities and makes you mentally strong for facing the upcoming challenges. Moreover, they also prepare you for what it is like to be an officer, teach you skills, etiquette, and imply the service code of conduct.

If you get into the Air Force Academy, you will have a curriculum that includes projects, case studies, swimming training, presentations, weapon training, book reviews, etc, for example. Training conducted at AFA are as follows:

  2. Air Traffic Control Officers Training

2. Air Force Administrative College (AFAC)

Located in the city of Coimbatore, AFAC is the oldest training institute of the Indian Air Force. In addition to its record, the place has the most extensive records of famous officers and is famous for serving in-service officers of the Navy, Air Force, and Army. It also has training programs for officers of friendly foreign countries.   

Courses available at Air Force Administrative College: 

  1. Firstly, Ground Duty ( Non-Technical and Technical)
  2. Basic Air Staff Course: Officers (BASCO)
  3. Intermediate Air Staff Course (ISCO)
  4. Basic Professional Knowledge Course: Officers (BPKC)
  5. Advanced Professional Knowledge Course: Officers (APKC) 
  6. Paralegal Course 

3. Air Force Technical College 

After completing the 22 weeks initial training period at AFA, the candidates are sent to Air Force Technical College. The remaining training of engineering officers at AFTC is 52 weeks. Further, the training is divided into two sections, 24 weeks each with a term break at the end of the first one. 

The students undergo training that includes work in electronic and propulsion labs, aviation, electronic industries, specialization involving visits to R & D establishments and front-line field units to facilitate assimilation. 

4. Flight Training Establishments 

Flight Training Establishments by the Indian Air Force are set up to train the officer to take off as a pilot and begin their duty. From basic to complex levels, each establishment marks the student’s progression. And when the candidate completes their training, they get awarded at the Combined Graduation Parade conducted by the Air Force Academy.

For example, Flying Training Establishments in India:

  1. Air Force Academy in Dundigal: Stage 0 and 1 flying training ( Six months each)
  2. Hakimpet Secunderabad 
  3. Transport Training Wing, Yelahanka 
  4. Bidar, Karnataka and Kalaikunda (West Bengal)

Once a pilot completes its Stage-I training, the further training involves three stages: Fighter, Transport, and Helicopter Stream. 

Fighter Stream 

Stage II: Advanced Stage, Hakimpet (24 weeks)

Stage III: Specialisation, Bidar, Kalaikunda (24 weeks)

Transport Stream 

Stage II and III- Yelahanka (48 weeks)

Helicopter Stream 

Stage II: Hakimpet (24 weeks 

Stage III: Yelahanka (24 weeks) 

5. National Defence Academy 

Situated in Khadakwasla, National Defence Academy is the most prestigious inter-service training establishments of the country. Also, candidates that are now brilliant military leaders, officers, astronauts, and gallantry awards recipients are graduated from NDA only. 

Successfully making heroes for more than 50 years, NDA is India’s foremost and best training institute. The training curriculum include three major activities spread over three years:  

  1. Firstly, Physical Training 
  2. Service Subjects 
  3. Academics ( You will get a degree after the completion of the course) 

After completing your three-year training course at NDA, you will go further to Air Force Academy for Flying/Ground Duty training. Moreover, after one year of your training, you will get commissioned as Permanent Commission Officer.
