Surgical Strike 2: Reasons Why Mirage 2000 Was Selected For IAF’s Air Strike across LoC

As many as 12 Mirage 2000 fighter Jets entered Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) and dropped multiple 1000-kg payloads in the Jaish-e-Mohammad terror camps. This is considered to be the Surgical Strike 2 after the Surgical Strike 2016, which was conducted by the Indian Army against Uri Attack 2016.

The 1000-Kg payloads were dropped in Balakot, Chakoti, and Muzaffarabad where more than 350 terrorists are expected to be killed. In Surgical Strike 2, it was reported that the JeM chief, Maulana Yousuf Azhar (alias Ustad Ghouri), the brother-in-law of Masood Azhar has been killed.

But why Mirage 2000 jet fighter was used for Surgical Strike 2? Instead of Mirage 2000, the Indian Air Force could have used many other latest and updated fighter jets. Mirage 2000 was used for Surgical Strike 2 because of the following reasons.

Low Fly Ability:

The Mirage 2000 is one of the fighter jets which have the ability to fly at low altitude. This feature makes it capable to conduct the Surgical Strike 2 in PoK during the early hours of Tuesday. The jet plane can easily rush into the air at low altitude without being noticed.  Mirage 2000 crossed the LoC and dropped the bombs in some 88 km insider the PoK.

HOTAS Control:

The HOTAS stands for Hands-on Throttle and Stick control. Under HOTAS control, most of the essential buttons are provided on the throttle lever of the aircraft. This makes it easy for the pilot to access vital functions through the throttle lever, without moving their hands to different locations. It also has Thales VEH 3020 head-up display and five cathode ray tube multi-function advanced pilot systems interface (APSI) displays.

Less Weight High Speed:

In comparison to the other fighter jets present in Indian Air Force (e.g. Sukhoi) Mirage 2000 is a bit better in terms of weight and speed. When compared to other fighter jets in the Air Force, Mirage 2000 have less weight and high speed, which makes it even more effective in secret operations like Surgical Strike 2.

New Thomson-CSF RDY:

After 2015, the Mirage 2000 received various upgrades including the new Thomson-CSF RDY (Radar Doppler Multi-Target) system. This new radar system makes it capable to track the enemy from a long distance.

Multiple Weapon Carrying Capability:

The updates given to the Mirage 2000 in 2015 made it more capable to carry multiple weapons for the enemy. In total it is capable to carry 9 weapons in a single flight, including five on the fuselage and two on each wing. Along with that, it has two internally mounted high-firing 30mm guns.

Upgraded Digital Weapon Delivery System:

The upgraded version of Mirage 2000 encompasses an upgraded weapon delivery and navigation system (WDNS). Along with this, it is also blessed with a TV/CT CLDP laser designation pod from Thales Optronics which makes the fighter jet capable to fire the weapons in the day and well as night time.

Long Years of Trust:

You can never deny the fact that Mirage has been accompanying the Indian Air Force since decades. Its contribution to the Kargil war 1999 can never be forgotten. Mirage 2000 played a vital role in killing enemies holding the positions at Tiger Hill and the Batalik region.

Specifications of the Mirage 2000 Jet:

  • Span – 29.9 feet
  • Length – 47 ft
  • Maximum take-off weight – 38,500 lbs
  • Combat weight – 21,000 lbs
  • Internal weapons – 2 * 30 mm guns
