Indian Military to set up Defence Cyber Academy – Focus on Cyber Security

In India, cyber security and threats to defence capabilities is always a major concern. There are numerous private organizations that delicately work on Cyber Security. But today, Army General Bipin Rawat, in an interview stated that Indian Military needs a Defence Cyber Academy that can take care of cyber warfare. The major reason to set up Cyber Academy is to put an end to the promotion of terrorist propaganda among the people as well as to protect military assets.

About Recruitment for Defence Cyber Academy?

According to the resources, no external recruitment will be made for Defence Cyber Academy. Instead, the entire staff will be selected from the IT personnel currently working in Indian Military. A total of 1,000 military personnel will be selected from the three wings of Indian Defence Forces.

Reason for Defence Cyber Academy Proposal:

In the recent past, it has been seen that the terrorists are promoting their motto among the people through social media. Nowadays, terrorist are operating against Defence forces through technology and hence promoting their own reputation. In order to curb them, it’s important to have a team that can stay ahead of them and understands what militants actually planning in the near future.

When General Bipin Rawat was asked about it, he said “We must also develop niche capabilities to disable the adversaries’ system. Today, the terrorists operating against us from across the borders are very tech-savvy. They are exploiting cyberspace to their advantage. If we don’t stay ahead of them, we will never be able to get over the phenomena of terrorism,

Another reason to promote the development of Defence Cyber Academy is to compete against other military powers like China. Currently, China has the capabilities of cyber warfare that makes it important for India to reach the same level.

Lt. General Satish Dua, the Chief of Integrated Defence Staff cited the example of Burhan Wani encounter, where the Internet was used as the medium to promote fake propaganda by terrorists. And interestingly, during the encounter of terrorist Burhan wani, he becomes a poster boy for the militants that helped them gain sympathy and support from the locals. Operations of Defence Cyber Academy:

The major task of Defence Cyber Academy is to put an end to the promotion of fake news and rumors among the people. Along with that, the academy will also be responsible to keep the entire defence assets secure.

About Lt General Satish Dua:

  • Lt General Satish Dua is currently the Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman.
  • He takes over the position from Air Marshal PP Reddy on 31 October 2016.
  • Lt Gen Satish Dua completed his Higher Command Course at Army War College, Mhow; Defence Services Staff College, Wellington and National Defence College, Delhi.
  • Satish Dua is considered to be one of the best counter-terrorist specialists.
